Happy half term Year Two! Take a look back on what we have done this week

In English this week, you analysed the text The Queen Who Banned Silence. You searched for coordinating conjunctions, subordinating conjunctions, adverbs, and expanded noun phrases, adding examples to your writer’s knowledge to help you remember them for your own writing. Towards the end of the week, you proudly wrote up your orangutan fact files into your presentation books, showing off your amazing handwriting. You all enjoyed reflecting on your writing from the start of the year and were impressed by how much your handwriting has improved. Great job!

In Steps to Read this week, you explored the fiction part of Grandad’s Garden. You learned how Billy and Grandad formed a special bond through gardening, watching their garden grow and change with the seasons. Throughout the week, you answered a range of comprehension and inference questions, showing a great understanding of the characters and the themes in the story.

In Maths this week, you continued your journey learning all about time. You built on your understanding of quarter past and quarter to and moved on to reading the clock in 5-minute intervals. To support your learning, you made your own clocks, which really helped you to visualise the time. You also learnt how to convert hours into minutes, remembering the very important fact that there are 60 minutes in an hour.

One of our biggest highlights this week was Sports Day! You were absolutely amazing as you soared through the finish line in each of your races. Everyone took part in four exciting events: the Bean Bag Race, where you had to collect and place all the bean bags in the hoop before running to the finish; the Hoop Stack, where you stacked hoops onto cones before sprinting to the end; the 4-in-1 Race, where you jumped, hopped, skipped, and ran; and finally, the Sprint Race. You showed incredible determination and energy in every event. The atmosphere was fantastic as you cheered on your teammates in your house colours. The sun was shining, and so were our spirits! A huge congratulations to everyone in blue house who won KS1 sports day. However, our sports day fun did not stop there as we got to help out in KS2 sports day. We were so happy to be able to support our older children in school by helping put the resources back out or give stickers out at the end of races. You were so mature and grown up whilst doing your jobs and it left me beaming with pride!

In our afternoon learning we have been super busy! In History, we built upon our learning about the great fire of Nantwich by understanding why the fire spread so quickly around Nantwich and why it had lasted for so long. You learnt that the houses were made out of wood and straw which is highly flammable, you learnt about how a man had let 4 bears out into the street which made people too scared to go out and help and finally there were no fire engines or hoses so carrying water from the river to the houses was not enough to put the fire out. In art, you carried on with making your tudor houses following your designs very carefully. You really are amazing architects and we can’t wait to paint these houses when we are back in school after half term. In RE, you thought carefully about our world religions and their places of worship. You learnt about Judaism and how Jewish people go to a Synagogue for their house of worship. You discovered that in a Synagogue you will find an ark that is covered in a parochet which holds the Torah. In your courageous advocacy work, you have been working hard on working as a team and you joined in with lots of teamwork activities which we found were very fun. One of our teamwork activities saw you having to build a trail from one hoop to the other and you were not able to touch the ground as it was lava. This was great fun but it took a lot of team work skill as you had to communicate carefully with your team and make sure that everyone knew how to follow the trail so they didn’t touch the ground. In computing you carried on making digital music but this time you had to create a sound track for an animal of your choice. We loved listening to these at the end of our lesson. In heartsmart, we completed our reflection of the unit. We discussed what we can do to when we feel sad or mad and that it’s ok to feel these emotions. The children said it’s ok to be mad or sad sometimes as long as we work on making ourselves feel better. For their reflection they wrote down how they deal with these emotions when they pop up. Bible Reference: Love does not count up wrong that have been done. 1 Corinthians 13:4-5. In music, we listened to our final piece of music – Saying Sorry. We noticed the verses had rhyming couplets. The story of the song was rather funny and it did make us giggle! We clapped rhythms and improvised to this song. We then completed our end of unit assessment. Well done year 2! In PE with coach Sam, you carried on practicing your throwing skills.

What a busy last week of half term you all had. Homework has been sent home with the children this can either be completed over the holidays or the first week back. The children asked for some more practice of time so they have got a sheet on this with their clocks they had made so they can practice. I hope you all have a restful half term with lots of fun with your families. I can’t believe we only have one half term left together Year Two.

Have a fun week!
