What a happy and busy week we have had in Reception!
Expressive Arts and Design Development: In music, we listened to Celebration by Kool and the Gang. We loved this song, it made us feel joyful and we couldn't stop moving to the rhythm. We found the pulse together and then listened to the Pat-a-Cake Games track, where we marked the beat in different ways using body percussion. To finish, we performed some of our favourite songs – we sang with big smiles on our faces!
One morning this week was very misty, and it gave us lots to talk about in Language and Communication Development. We noticed mist on the windows and heavy dew on the grass. We read Misty from Shirley Hughes' Out and About: First Book of Poems and explored some new words to describe what we had seen. We loved learning their meanings.
In Literacy Development, we were very excited to start becoming writers! This week we had a go at writing our very first accurate sentences. Each day we wrote a simple three-word sentence, remembering to use finger spaces between each word. We kept the beginning of our sentence the same and changed the last word to build up our fluency. We were so proud of our writing!
Mathematical Development: In maths we compared groups of objects to work out which group had more and which had fewer. We started with big differences where it was easy to see, then moved on to smaller differences where we paired up the objects to see if there was one more or one fewer. We even thought about how to make groups equal , and asked ourselves, can we always do this?
Physical Development: In PE, we had more fun with Mr J and Mr M. We warmed up by hopping and running like bunnies, then had to dodge and swerve to avoid the big dog (played brilliantly by Mr J!). After that, we split into four teams and raced to collect as many carrots as we could. We all worked so hard – and every team collected 12 carrots each!
Personal, Social and Emotional Development: In Wellbeing time, we thought about the things that make us smile. We shared ideas like being in the garden, playing with our friends, making crafts, colouring, and even playing football. It was lovely to hear how many different things bring us happiness.
We also loved following our own interests in continuous provision. Some of us became paleontologists, digging for dinosaur bones, while others used big construction blocks to build cars outside. We were inspired by Preschool and made our own collage patchwork elephants. We also explored how different-sized cogs could fit together and turn at the same time. We created obstacle courses for our friends, testing how fast and carefully we could move. And sometimes, we simply chose to enjoy five minutes of peace with a story.
It has been another wonderful week of learning, playing, and smiling together. Reception, you have shone your lights brightly again this week with your words, actions, and joy.
We can't wait to see what next week brings!
