A Great Week in Reception Class!

The sun has continued to shine, and we have loved being outdoors, enjoying the glorious weather and all the joys our garden brings.

Physical Development: In PE with Coach Beth, we continued developing our gross motor skills through a range of exciting games and physical challenges. We built on last week's focus, practicing our coordination, balance, and agility. It's been great to see the children growing in confidence and enjoying being active in the sunshine!

Mathematical Development: This week, our focus has been on halving quantities by sharing into two equal groups. We made the connection that halving is the opposite, or inverse, of doubling. So, if we know that double three is six, we can use that to help us understand that half of six is three. The children enjoyed lots of practical activities to help embed this new learning.

Literacy and Language and Communication: Our theme around rivers and oceans has continued to inspire us. This week, we explored the beautifully poetic story 'My Ocean is Blue.' We loved the way it used opposites to describe the ocean, big and small, quiet and loud, and how the colours of the sea can change depending on the weather and time of day. Inspired by the story, the children created their own ocean poems and they are amazing!

Understanding the World: We delved deeper into our learning about oceans and seas, using books to discover that the sea has a tide, it comes in and out. We also read stories like 'The Undersea Cleaning Spree' and talked about how rubbish can end up in the ocean. It was a powerful reminder of our Earth Day promises and how small actions can help keep our planet healthy.

Personal, Social and Emotional Development: Our wellbeing activities this half term are helping us prepare for the transition to Year 1. Last week, we reflected on what we're proud of from our Reception year. This week, our big question was: "What do I want my Year 1 teacher to know about me?"
We shared lots of thoughtful answers like : "I'm good at writing," "I like Taylor Swift," "I go to Rainbows after school," "I love school!"

In Heartsmart, Boris set us a series of fun challenges this week to help us learn the importance of perseverance. From throwing balls into hoops to balancing on wobble boards and walking on stilts, we encouraged one another and reminded ourselves that we can keep trying, even when something feels tricky at first.
Boris says, "If at first you don't succeed, try again."
Bible link: Endurance produces character, and character produces hope. Romans 5:4.

Expressive Arts and Design: This week in music, we listened to Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy by Tchaikovsky. We learned he was a Russian composer who lived nearly 200 years ago and wrote ballets, operas, and other music. We watched a performance by The Royal Ballet and were captivated by how the ballerina brought the music to life.

We also explored composition, building on our learning from last week, we used middle C and D on the glockenspiels to work out Baa Baa Black Sheep. The children did a brilliant job following the notes and playing along!

Another joyful week of learning and growing together.
Happy weekend Reception Class
