Preschool News 30.1.26

What a cheerful, busy and brilliantly smiley week we’ve had in Preschool. The children have been exploring stories, numbers, creativity and kindness in all sorts of joyful ways. We began with our Heartsmart focus, Catch a Smile, where the children passed a smile around the circle and talked about how sharing one can brighten someone’s day. It was a lovely way to build confidence, empathy and those all important PSED skills.
Stories filled our week with rhythm and giggles. We enjoyed lots of rhyming books, dipped into our favourite book basket and retold The Three Little Pigs with great enthusiasm. These rich story moments helped the children tune into rhyme, join in with repeated phrases and develop their listening and language skills.
Maths was all about the number 4, thanks to Pete the Cat and His Four Groovy Buttons. The children practised recognising, subitising and even writing the numeral, and we linked it to our rhyme of the week, Hickory Dickory Dock, counting up to four as the mouse scampered up the clock.
Our “Helen Says” block game brought lots of laughter as the children followed positional instructions like under, next to and on top. It was a playful way to build spatial awareness and strengthen understanding of language.
Fine motor fun was woven throughout the week too. The children enjoyed cutting playdough with scissors — a brilliant way to strengthen hand muscles and coordination — and they loved threading coloured nuts and bolts together, which supported dexterity, concentration and early problem solving.
Creativity took centre stage in the art area, where the children explored printing with balloons, balls, corks and all sorts of exciting tools.
Indoors, The Three Little Pigs inspired wonderful house building with straw, sticks and mini bricks, while outdoors the children loved transporting jungle animals around using cars and vehicles — full of storytelling, teamwork and imaginative play.

It’s been a week bursting with curiosity, creativity and smiles. We can’t wait to see where the children’s ideas take us next.
