Dear Children and Families,
Welcome to Year 6. I hope you have had a fantastic summer break filled with fun and laughter. I am very excited to spend our year together and know what a fantastic year we will have; beginning with Big Art and of course PGL!
This term's learning is based around one of my favourite books, Goodnight Mister Tom by Michelle Magorian. This book began its life as a short story and was later developed into a novel and eventually a film. It is a moving tale of an eight-year-old boy called William Beech who is evacuated from London's Deptford area to go and live in a village called Little Weirwold shortly before the Second World War breaks out. In this heart melting story Michelle Magorian paints a very sensitive picture of love, hatred and loss, and conveys a strong message of change.
This term we will begin with our BIG ART project by creating a spitfire of our own as we learn about Black Saturday and The Blitz. This will take pride of place and hang in our classroom. We will also investigate the use of silhouettes; looking at artists who use this technique eg, American silhouette cutting artist Karl Johnson. We will create our own artwork of The Blitz using this technique.
PE will take place on a Wednesday afternoon and will be taught by Mr Charlesworth. He will teach every PE lesson and will also offer lunchtime and after school sports clubs. Please ensure all PE kits are in school and clearly labelled. Summer caps and filled water bottles are essential if the weather is warm.
Homework will be set each Friday. I encourage you to complete all your homework fully and on time. I use homework to consolidate your learning and to enable you to prepare for a new week of learning. I will run homework clubs during the week (some lunchtimes) to support this. Please be sure to use them whenever you need to. Homework will be checked and marked each week.
Spellings, Spag, times tables testing and reading diary checks will take place on a Friday morning, so please ensure all relevant books are in school.
MyMaths and Spag online homework will be set every Friday with at least one task to be completed. If you are unable to complete these tasks at home, or if you need support, please let me know and I will arrange for you to complete them in school.
Our learning will follow SPARK — Spirituality, Practical, Asking Questions, Resilience and Knowledge. Our love of learning will continue to grow as we aim high and achieve our goals. "The best preparation for tomorrow is doing your best today." H. Jackson Brown.
I know we will be a strong partnership, if there is anything you need to discuss I am always on the door every morning and afternoon. If you require a longer chat please could you make an alternative time with me, or through the office. I am thoroughly looking forward to our new year together, remember, "You're braver than you believe, stronger than you seem and smarter than you think." A.A. Milne.
This term's holistic plan will be uploaded shortly.
