Well what a brilliant way to cap of a super half term! This week we have been rock n' roll stars, geographic researchers and even stepped into the shoes of a character from our book...

In English we finished our unit on diary writing. We decided it would be really cool to write a diary as Kestrel, a main character, from our story. We used the amazing audiobook to plan our day as Kestrel, listening to key events and noting them down in a variety of different ways. Some children used drawings, spider diagrams and lists. We then thought about what emotions Kes would be feeling throughout her day. We fine-tuned and edited until we were ready to write on Thursday. The children did fantastically well, remembering all of the key features we had talked about before! Well done!

In maths we started a new unit on statistics. Our focus this week revolved around line graphs and how to answer questions using and interpreting the data. We got so confident with this that on Thursday we plotted our own line graphs using some data, can you remember what our graph showed?

In Music we capped off our first unit with a brilliant performance of Livin' on a Prayer by Bon Jovi, if you haven't seen it on YouTube yet, please check it out!

In geography we delved into our focus of The Great Lakes of North America. We had a competition to see who could find out the most about the continent of North America! Lots of intresting facts and discoveries were found! We then had a lesson looking at 4 video clips. We used the 4 video clips as research tools to find out more about the Great Lakes. We absolutely loved this and this led to a very thought provoking lesson which led to us discussing how deep the lakes are compared to the oceans! We researched this and found out that Lake Superior is about 1330 ft deep whilst the deepest part of the ocean is 36,200 feet! Check out this awesome video we found to give some scale to our question...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UwVNkfCov1k

Well done to everybody in Year 5 for having an absolutely brilliant first half term. I've enjoyed so many moments already and cannot wait to see what next half term brings!

I hope you have a wonderful half term break,

Mr Dale
