Another week of learning has flown by in Year 5. This week we have been authors, scientists and teachers too!

In English we spent the week writing our our short stories. Children wrote the next chapter in our class story; The Wind Singer. We planned and made a checklist of what to include before we brought our stories to life in our English books. Everybody put so much effort and thought into their stories, well done! Children created new worlds, characters and plots all from their imagination!

In Maths we discovered some new language. Prime numbers, factors, common factors, highest common factor, squared and cubed were all terms we tackled this week. Can you remember them all? We also focused upon multiplying and dividing by 10, 100 and a 1000! Well done! We then put all the knowledge we had learned from this week into a YouTube video to help others with those tricky terms; it will be uploaded very soon!

In Science we continued our investigations into forces, particularly focusing on air resistance and friction. We cfeated our own experiment to find out which surface had the most friction. We talked about the variables of our experiment and predicted what might happen at the start. We looked at sliding friction, using our trainers as the objects we were testing. Children tested the friction on the carpet, grass, gravel and wood. We found that smoother surfaces had less friction and so our trainers slid further. We wanted to look at rolling friction next and so w decided that we would make our very own landsailers to test this! Children got into groups and designed their landsailer, thinking about their wheels, axels, shape, mast and purpose. We will be making these on Monday, please bring in any materials you think might help to create your landsailer!

In R.E we looked at the different titles that are given to Jesus. We explored what a title actually was and then discovered that Jesus has many titles. We investigated these using dictionaries for definitions and the iPad as a research tool.

Have a brilliant weekend,

Mr Dale
