Year 5 Weekly News
Hello! It's the end of week four which means it's time for another news update.
In Maths this week, we've started a new Unit (a short this time) on the place value of numbers up to 1 million. As part of this unit, we have been looking at the value of digits in numbers, comparing numbers and ordering numbers too.
In English, we have been creating setting descriptions linked to the Minotaur's labyrinth. To begin with, we looked at a boring piece of writing and discussed how it could be improved. As a class, you came up with some excellent ideas which included better word choices, better punctuation and better use of sentence openers. As a result, you then spent two lessons recapping and expanding your knowledge of fronted adverbials. On Friday, you then weaved your knowledge of adverbials into your setting description. We learnt that using good openers in your writing makes a massive difference.
In our afternoon lessons, we used our knowledge of ancient Greek pots to design our own on Monday. You thought carefully about which era you wanted it to be from and you tried hard to emulate the style of the pots in your drawings. On Tuesday, you had music with Miss Holland, and you had P.E with Mrs Jenkins. On Wednesday, you did your first D.T lesson. This term we will be making cushions, so your first lesson involved evaluating different cushions and understanding the difference between functional and decorative cushions. Your Thursday afternoon was filled with the history of Ancient Greece. You created a timeline of the key events in Ancient Greek history. Finally, we rounded the week of with computing. We did our first coding lesson of the year and we then moved onto exploring Excel as this will become part of our computing project this term.
See you on Monday,
Miss P
