It's time again for another Y5 news update.

In our English lessons this week, we have been learning about adverbials. We got a little stuck initially but with hard work and resilience we got there and realised that an adverbial simply gives more information to a verb in a sentence. And, if you put it at the front, it's called a Fronted Adverbial. It really is that simple! We then weaved our knowledge of adverbials into a piece of writing where we re-told part of Theseus and the Minotaur. The descriptions and adverbials you came up with are rather impressive, well done.

Rounding and Powers of 10 were the focus of maths this week. We learnt about rounding to 10,000 and 100,000 and how Powers of 10 are just adding multiples of 10, 100, 100, 1000 etc.

We started and ended our week with science! During Monday afternoon we begin one of our science topics. . . Space! Lots of us are very excited about this topic (including me). We gathered our initial ideas and had a debate about whether the sun is the middle of our solar system. The theories and reasonings each side had were very good but when we investigated further, we realised it really is in the middle! We finished the week by looking at the planets in our solar system. Initially, we used different sized spheres to compare the size of the planets. Did you know that comparatively, Jupiter is the size of a basketball whereas Mercury is the size of a peppercorn? Next, we used the internet to gather key facts about each planet.

Midweek, we got messy with clay as we brought our Ancient Greek pot and plate designed to life. We released that we may have been little over ambition with our designs, so we had a do a little bit of simplifying. Nevertheless, you were all brilliant and I really am in awe of all of you. You didn't give up and showed true determination — even though it was rather tricky. Out of nothing, each of you have managed to create something very impressive.

I hope you have a great weekend and see you on Monday,

Miss P
