Year 5 News

What a short half term it has been! We have only been back four weeks, and now it's time for another half term holiday which means it's time for the last news update of the half term.
This week, we have been particularly busy as it has been Safety Week, we have continued with swimming and we also began our John Muir Award.

For Year 5, Safety Week began when we went on our second swimming lesson because we needed to know how to walk safely in the changing rooms and around the pool, and we also understand that learning to swim is an extremely important skill because it keeps us safe in the water. Throughout the week, we have been lucky enough to be visited by GIST who taught us all about road safety and the Blue Cross who taught us all about how to be safe around dogs. We have also learnt about sun safety and carried out a risk assessment of our classroom. Whilst conducting the risk assessment, we realised that chair legs are the biggest trip hazard for us, so we have all agreed to sit on our chairs properly and tuck our chairs in to reduce the risk of us tripping on them. Our activities for Safety Week concluded on Friday when we were visited by the school nurse. The school nurse discussed how your bodies begin to change as you grow. Many changes were discussed, and one of these changes was the fact that our bodies produce more sweat. The school nurse talked about how this change can be managed and she talked about the importance of keeping clean by having regular showers and/or baths.

In other news, we visited Wybunbury Moss for our first official John Muir session. On our walk around the moss, we moved through different habitats and saw cotton grass, butterflies and even a common lizard. On our return to school, we completed the first page of our John Muir Award Booklets by recounting what we had done. To do this, some of us used drawings, others wrote descriptions and others wrote diary entries. Well done everyone.

In our afternoons, we have been carrying on with our French, and we have completed the next phase of our art project which was colour mixing using acrylics. Finally, to draw the week to a close, we continued learning about the Ancient Kingdom of Benin and then we went on Code Studio.

I hope you all enjoy your holiday, and I look forward to seeing you again when we return.

Thank you for another great half term,

Miss P
