Miss Davies has been teaching Maths again in Year 4 this week. The children completed their unit of work on multiplication and division. Miss Davies recapped areas the children had already looked at to consolidate their learning. The children were given some very big multiplication and division problems and used their knowledge of making numbers 10 and 100 times bigger to help. They recapped what fact families were and how to use them and finally looked at word problems. In particular, children were asked to identify which operation was being used and use this to answer the one and two-step word problems.

In English this week, the children have been exploring non-fiction text. The children began by identifying the features of a non-fiction text based on a Quidditch guide. In the following lesson, children had to sort different names of text based on whether they were fiction or non-fiction. As their main task, children were asked to write their own non-fiction text based on a potion. They needed to explain what ingredients were in it, how it is made and what precautions you should take. Next, we applied this to writing another non-fiction text based on a guide to quidditch. The children watch videos and were given a comprehension style task (during book club) to help them learn about quidditch. We ended the week by writing our own quidditch guides in the style of a non-fiction text.

On Monday, the children were completing our studywork pages we had started so far and were given the opportunity to play on the game aspect of code studio which applies everything they have learnt so far to some well-known children's games.

On Tuesday, Miss Davies started a new unit or our RE work based on incarnation. The children discussed how Good News could be linked to the Christmas story and the role of each character. They even explored how each character shared Good News within the story. Afterwards, the children learnt some more songs in preparation for YoungVoices.

On Wednesday, we started a new aspect of Science. The children started to think about states of matter. We learnt there were three — solids, liquids and gases. The children were given items which they had to sort into the categories. After learning a little more about the molecules that make up these different states of matter, the children began to discuss how we organise a fair test. The children worked as a team to decide what parts of the test they would keep the same, what they would change and what they would measure.

On Thursday, Year 4 had PE with Mr Turner.

Finally, on Friday, we ended the week by starting two new studywork pages. We were focusing on our History pages which showed the famous trainlines and facts about famous trains.

It has been a very busy week in Year 4.
