What a busy week in Year 4!

We kicked off our week learning what adverbs are and how they are used correctly in our writing. We learnt that they can be used to add more information about a verb and tells us how, when, where and with whom. On Tuesday we moved on to learning about adverbial phrases. These provide us with the same extra information as adverbs but are more than just one word. We also started to look at the features of a diary entry. Next, we started to look at what we would write about in our diary entry. We have written about our trip to Diagon Alley. We read the part in the book when Harry is taken there to buy all of his things for Hogwarts. We took ideas from the book and watched videos to gather ideas about what we saw, hear, smelt, tasted and how we felt. In order to make sure we had enough ideas to fill our diaries, we looked at an example and chose some words and phrases that we would like to use in our writing. We ended the week by planning each section of our diary and are looking forward to writing them at the beginning of the week.

In our maths work we used our knowledge of place value to add 1s, 10s, 100s and 1000s to any given number. The children learnt how the digit changes depending on what is added to it. Next, we learnt how to use the column method. This involves us placing our digits in line with each other to help us add each value digit together. We then moved on to adding digits which would result in carrying — moving the value of a digit into the next column.

On Monday afternoon, we practised for our upcoming Harvest service. On Tuesday we used the iPads to research four different trains which revolutionised the industry and created fact files in groups. In Geography this week we used our knowledge of compass directions to find the treasure on our maps and located counties on maps of the UK. In Science we have previously been learning about how to classify animals so this week we created our own classification key using questions to separate animals. Finally, we ended our week by water colouring a map of Hogwarts which will be used in our study work for Geography.

On Thursday, we went to church for our Harvest service. All of KS2 worked fantastically hard to learn their words and took part in a great celebration for Harvest. Well done KS2.

It has been another busy week in Year 4.
