Year 4 News!

Home » News » Year 4 News!

What an amazing start to Year 4. It was fantastic to welcome everyone back with a smile on their face, a story to tell and a buzz of excitement for Year 4. As soon as the children stepped into the classroom, they knew what we would be learning this term (I think the brick wall labelled platform 9 ¾ on the door to our classroom was a giveaway).

On our first day in Year 4, we spent time getting to know each other and sharing our lovely memories of our six-week holidays. We kicked off the excitement of our new topic by reading the beginning of our book and discussing what we already know but more importantly what the children would like to learn this term. In the afternoon, we started our D.T unit of work for the term. We explored the design, what wands are made of and how materials we could use to make them. Then we were able to use all this to design our own. We will be making our wands next week as every wizard needs a wand for their first day at Hogwarts.

In Maths this week, we have learnt about Roman Numerals. We were able to match Roman numerals to numbers we use today. We were able to work out which Roman numerals we needed to use to create two and three-digit numbers. In English this week, we were learning about letter writing. We started by restructuring a letter and discussing the importance of the layout. This then lead us on nicely to discuss the features of a letter. Year 4 were great detectives and found all the features as a class. On Friday, we then used this knowledge to plan our own letter. On Monday, we are writing a letter to Mr and Mrs Dursley to explain why a baby boy has strangely been placed on their doorstep.

The first week back would not be complete without a LOT of BIG art! This week we have learnt about a technique called pointillism. This was introduced by George Seurat a famous French artist. He used a technique of using lots of tiny dots to create a picture. We used this technique to recreate the Hogwarts house shields and focused on the use of colour mixing. Interesting fact: some of George Seurat's paintings took him 2 years to produce, luckily, ours only took about 2 and a half hours! We then also applied this technique to recreating the first Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone book cover.

On Friday, we gave out homework books and went through the expectations of homework in Year 4. Books are filled with lots of different tasks some of which are new to Year 4. I am sure the children will be able to explain all of these things! We also spent time to discuss the importance of reading in Year 4.

It has been a magical week in Year 4 and I am looking forward to the next one! I hope you all have a fantastic weekend!
