Year 4 News!

What a lovely way to start our final half-term!

Throughout Maths this week, Year 4 have been learning more about decimals! We can now use decimals to make a whole, write decimals in words and digits and order and compare decimals. We have used counters and place value grids to further our understanding of the value of decimals and used this to help us recognise which decimals have the largest and smallest value.

In English this week, we have continued our work on Macbeth. This unit of work has been focused on children performing aloud, using improvisation and preparing their own play scripts. As a group, we read scene 1 and scene 2 of Macbeth. In this part of the play, Lady Macbeth convinces her husband (Macbeth) to kill King Duncan, however, you don't hear this conversation during the play. So, we decided to write this part ourselves! In pairs, we acted out the dramatic conversation using what we had learnt about the characters so far. When we were happy with the role play, we then wrote this as a play. We were careful to ensure we included all of the features of a play. Towards the end of the week, we planned a present tense narrative based on Macbeth killing King Duncan. We have started to word bank ideas and wrote the opening as a whole class.

During our Science lessons this week, we have learnt more about human teeth! We know not only know the names of all the teeth we have in our mouth but also the function of them. To show what we had learnt, we created models of our mouths. These needed to show the number of teeth we have as well as creating realistic teeth which can be easily identified. We had lots of fun creating and sharing our work.

This week, we started our DT unit of work. During this term, Year 4 will be creating a model of a Tudor house. Before we could do this however, we needed to learn more about Tudor houses. We have started by looking at recognisable features — windows, beams, jetty's etc. We then moved on to compare rich and poor Tudor housing and what they would have been like inside. At the end of the week, Year 4 designed their own floor plans for a rich and poor Tudor house.

During our Music lesson this week, Year 4 have been focusing on finding the beat to songs and pieces of music. To familiarise themselves with the beat, they began by clapping the rhythm to the names of Henry VIII's wives. These were then performed to the rest of the class. Finally, the children used musical instruments to compose their own piece of music to the beat they had created.

In our French lesson this week, Year 4 recapped all the greeting we had already learnt and using the game from last lesson, more phrases were added. We can now greet someone in French in over 6 ways!

Finally, our week ended with our Team Lewis Football Day. Many of year 4 children took part in a football match. You all showed fantastic sportsmanship on the pitch and those cheering on the team at the sideline.

Have a lovely week!
