Year 4 News!

Home » News » Year 4 News!

Wow! What a nice week back after the Easter holidays! We have jumped straight into our new topic of the Tudors. Please check out our updated class page to find out more about this term's topic.

In English, we have been writing recounts of our first visit to Tudor London. In our story, Jack Briars makes his way to London in an attempt to give himself a better life. We have used lots of sources to help us gather an idea about what life was like in London in the Tudor period. We watched videos, listened to audio, looked at pictures, listened to recounts and read setting descriptions from other books. We focused on gathering ideas about what we could see, hear, smell and how we felt. We look forward to finishing these on Tuesday.

Our SPaG focus for this week has been adverbial phrases. We have looked at the type of adverbial phrases and whether they describe the way in which something is done, where it is done and when it is done. We have then been using these within our writing.

In Maths we have completed our Fractions unit of work. We have learnt more about adding and subtracting fractions and looked in particular at answering word problems. We then moved on to learn about finding a fraction of a quantity. We used the bar model method to draw out the amount and work out the value of each part. We also learnt how to use calculations to help us.

In Music, Year 4 have started their first unit of Charanga with Miss Holland. The children are learning to follow the beat of the song and learn to warm up their voices properly.

Art has been a big part of our afternoons this week. We have looked at Tudor portraits. As a class we were all given a piece of Henry VIII's portrait. We used our sketching skills to recreate the part we had been given and have then learnt how to use oil pastels to add colour to our work. We focused on adding light and dark colours to show shadows and smudging the oil pastels.

In History we have started at the very beginning! We have learnt about the Battle of Bosworth this week. This is a key event in the Tudor period as it was when the Tudors came to power. To develop an understanding of who took part in the battle and learn what happened, we recreated the battle outside. We then learnt of the importance of the Tudor rose. Finally, we have started to learn our Tudor song for this term which helps us remember the key date for the Battle of Bosworth.

I have started to introduce some French words in class this week but I am looking forward to do to having our first French lesson next week.

Have a nice long weekend!
Miss Welch
