Year 3 weekly news 17.9.21

In English this week we started to learn our model text all about being lost in the colosseum. We out actions to the words to help us remember it. You were really good y3! We then spent the rest of the week learning about what a colosseum is like, what happened there and what it would have been like to visit it. You then wrote about what you had found out using different sentence openers.

In Maths, we continued with our place value unit of work and this time we used different resources to help us represent numbers up to 1000. You have worked so hard and I have been really impressed with your number knowledge.

Our book reviews are still coming in thick and fast. You are fantastic readers Year 3 and I love reading them all. As a class, we were all particularly impressed with Finn's who had included lots of detail. Super work Finn!

In our music lesson we introduced the glockenspiel. We learnt how to play them and how to respect the instrument. We used notes G,A and B to play riffs and improvise. Well done Year 3 a great start.

In our art lesson this week, we linked our learning to volcanoes which we had found out about in geography, in particular Mount Vesuvius in Pompei in Italy. You watched videos and studied photographs of volcanoes and then first experimented with colours using oil pastels. You used the colours and the photographs to then create your own volcano creations. You were then proud to show them to the class and celebrate each other's work!

In RE on Monday, we looked at the story of Jesus calming the storm. On our tables we used questions to make us think deeply about the story. We thought that if we were in the boat, that we too would have been amazed. We would have gone home and told everyone what had happened. We decided that, that was what Jesus wanted them to do so that more people would trust him and follow him. For Christians today we thought that they could learn to trust more that God can do anything!

Geography this week saw us finding out all about Europe. Firstly we recapped the continents we could remember and Alice and Tallulah reminded us of a great song to help us remember all the continents. Thank you girls! We then used Google maps to first find Wybunbury, then Cheshire, then the UK, then all the way out to Europe. We looked at maps to see how many countries in Europe we had heard of and then used our own blank maps to locate the countries. We then explored capital cities of the countries we had found and famous landmarks. We even spotted the colosseum in Rome! Our learning later in the week took us onto volcanoes after reading the story 'Escape from Pompeii' which we found out was based on a true story. We will continue to learn more about volcanoes next week.

This week's computing lesson focused on saving work, adding text, pictures and stickers and taking and deleting photos on the iPads. We used Pic Collage to make our own collages of the classroom. They were fantastic and I can't wait for them to be part of our display!

In French, we focused on learning some basic conversational skills, asking "what is your name?" And answering "my name is..." I was so impressed and lots of you were keen to stand up and have a go infront of the class. Trés bien Year 3!

We finished our week with a design and technology lesson, this term's focus being sewing. We recapped what a running stitch looks like and then used the practise cards to have a go ourselves. The whole class scored 10/10 for their fantastic sewing. We then transferred our skills to using binka and thread to further practise our skills. It was really lovely to hear some of you say you thought it was easier with lots of practise and that you had improved since last year's sewing project. I can't wait for our next lesson already.

See you all tomorrow.
Miss McCurrie
