Year 3 news

We've been busy bees in year 3 again this week.

We have written postcards in English lessons, pretending to be characters from Kensuke's Kingdom. We used the present perfect tense to write sentences all about our adventures and worked hard to include question marks and exclamation marks in our writing. We have also put lots of effort into editing our writing to improve grammar and add more information. We've learned how to use a dictionary to find meanings and check spellings, and also explored prefixes (un, sub, dis, mis, re, anti) to find out how they change the meaning of a word.

In book club, we've found out how we can use the information we gather from reading to make sensible predictions about what may come next in stories. We've thought about types of fiction books and know that they can range from adventure stories to fables.
In maths, we have started work on multiplication and faced 'stuck challenges' and persevered. Some of us can now use grid method to calculate, and others can find different ways to represent our times tables. We've also found out what happens when we multiply a number by 10.

Our afternoons have seen us busy with: research about famous explorers, P.E, study work and R.E.

Today, we learned all about the Jewish festival of Hanukkah, and we made Menorah cards to remind us that this is the festival of light and that Jewish people celebrate in similar ways to Christians at Christmas during this time; giving cards and presents, playing games, cooking special food and lighting candles.

We have booked the coach for our Blue Planet trip, and next week letters will come home with more details. We are able to invite parent helpers to join us...although, as we are only granted 4 free places for adults, parents who wish to join us may need to share the cost of adult entry prices.

If there are any parents who have free time available, it would be great to form a year 3 fundraising group. Activities you organise which raise funds would enable us to enrich your child's learning with extra visitors and resources. Please do pop in to have a chat about how this is working for other classes.

Next week we have more fossil making, story writing and investigating to look forward to...not to mention discovering who Michael is sharing his tropical island with!

Have a great weekend year 3.
