We're at the end of our first half term already. The time has flown!

This week, we began by researching life in an Anglo-Saxon village and thought about what makes a non-fiction book non-fiction! We realised that fiction is usually written as a long piece of prose in chapters and that the pictures in these books are often drawings. Non-fiction books have a completely different layout including: a main heading, subheadings, sections of facts, technical, subject-specific vocabulary, real photographs with captions to explain them, diagrams, bullet points and much more. Then we used our research to begin writing information texts of our own for study work.

In maths, we focused on data. We thought of a question which could be answered by gathering data and made a table to tally our results. We went out on to the school field and counted leaf colour on trees. We made our tally. Back in class, we turned our data into bar charts and pictograms and finally asked and answered questions based on the data we had collected.

In the afternoons, we presented poetry for study work books and drew and inked arrows. Miss Lake was amazed by our care and attention to detail. Brilliant.

Mrs Jones (Sammy's mum) came into school and helped us to have fun making Robin Hood hats. Thank you for giving up your time to help us, Mrs Jones.

Next half term, we will begin our design and technology project and consider ways to make a strong castle tower.

Towards the end of the half term, we will hold a Robin Hood celebration day and to make sure we look the part, our technology homework is to design and make a shield. This should be designed with Robin Hood, the Outcasts and their life in Sherwood Forest in mind.

Have a lovely half term, everyone. You have certainly worked hard during your first half term in year 3 and deserve it.

Happy holiday.

Miss Lake
