Year 1 - World Chimpanzee Day

Home » News » Year 1 - World Chimpanzee Day

Today is the first World Chimpanzee Day! This week Year 1 have received an interesting letter from the famous Chimpanzee expert Jane Goodall. Receiving a letter is always exciting! Within Jane's letter she talked about how interested she is in our Chimpanzee work which we completed last term. Jane also commented on how much she liked the Chimp Haven song written with Miss O'Shea. As we had already done such good work, she has asked us to promote World Chimpanzee Day. This gave us a great project and year 1 came up with all sorts of ideas. On Friday we created posters, a chimpanzee habitat and sung our song on a procession around school. I think our Wybunbury Delves family had a lovely surprise when we arrived in classrooms with our posters and monkeys. Some of our children were dressed as monkeys too! We can't wait to send all of our hard work to Jane. For more information please see https://www.worldchimpanzeeday.org/

We have also been getting to know another famous lady who was born in 1815 — Grace Darling. We explored what it would have been like to live in a lighthouse, and as we looked at photographs and paintings, we found clues linked to Grace and her family . Her story has also come to life in our classroom and garden. In small teams we worked together to act out a day in the life of Grace Darling. Later in the week we got to know the events that made Grace famous, and we also learnt that she recieved a £50 reward from Queen Victoria.

Another project this week has been finishing off our study work books. Year 1, you have set yourself high expectations for the way you present your work, and I'm sure your Mums and Dads and other family members will be very impressed when they come to look at your books on Tuesday afternoon.

It was lovely to see you at the Summer Light Festival yesterday.

Have a lovely weekend,

Mrs Pointon
