Year 1 Weekly News

We have been doing lots this week in Year 1; from multiplication to how Lego bricks are made we have learned so much!

In English this week we looked at describing the fireworks we saw at the weekend and produced some beautiful pieces of work from this, my favourite was "The fireworks pop like popping candy" and "Fireworks look like bright tins of paint exploding in the night sky". Wow! We also practised our handwriting this week in our very snazzy handwriting books, our handwriting is looking so much neater already, well done guys!

In Maths we have been looking at the tricky concepts of multiplication and division, however we've had lots of fun exploring this along the way! We talked about sharing sweets and what was fair and linked this to division problems. Whilst we tackled multiplication as sets of, groups of and lots of, we did lots of grouping and some of us even game up with our own questions. Well done to William Hughson whose question of "There were 5 fields with 5 sheep in each field, how many sheep are there altogether?" got us really thinking, super work!

In Geography this week Mrs. Pointon looked at landmarks linking this to London, I was so pleased to hear how much we know about London landmarks and was very impressed at the watercolour paintings the children had created. In R.E with Mrs. Taylor children were busy producing work for their classroom display, whilst all of our woven crosses are near completion! Hooray!

In Science this week we have been learning all about everyday materials like metal, plastic, wood and paper. We have sorted materials, created presentations about materials and even found out about the journey of a Lego brick. We found out that 2.6 million, YES MILLION, Lego bricks are made every hour, how amazing! We also discussed words like 'transparent' and 'durable' (please quiz us on these as we are getting quite good at knowing what they mean).

All in all another lovely week in the Year 1 classroom and learning environment, well done Year 1, have a lovely weekend.

Mr Dale
