Year 1 News - Our First Week Back

Home » News » Year 1 News - Our First Week Back

What a wonderful week in Year 1. It started when lots of toys were found in our classroom. We collected them together and worked out that they were trying to tell us a message. 'Please help! We are afraid of the toy box.' We came up with some great ideas about why the toy box might be scared. The next day we followed a trail to a scary looking Naughty toy box on the playground and we listened to a poem to describe what the box looked like and what it did. We heard words like gigantic eyes, dirty teeth and a long sticky tongue. We then found out that the toy box likes to gobble toys! We were set a mission to write warning posters and display them around school. On Friday morning Mrs Hughes came rushing into Year 1 with the Naughty toy box. She explained that it had been found in the library. As a class we were still unsure how safe the box would be so we wrote a letter to Mrs Chesters to persuade her to open the box. She brought Mr Dale along too and we all enjoyed looking at each other's letters. Mrs Chesters and Mr Dale tentatively opened the box to find some new toys and Ginger, our class bear. What a great week of writing Year 1. You have really impressed me.

In Numeracy we have continued to look at take aways by taking away using pictures, numberlines and by finding the difference. We also worked as a great team to create our number rainbow display. We all worked in different ways to enhance our display and what a fantastic job you did. You can now see number lines, number sentences and a board full of childrens' contributions and ideas.

Looking at photos of London have been the starting point of our London topic. We created our own London bus book and explored all the things we already know about London. We then set about finding out where London is on a map. We went outside to look at the outdoor maps and we found London on the world map and the UK map.

In RE we have been thinking about all of our learning related to Good News. As we role played the story of the two builders we thought about other good news storied in the bible. We drew pictures, listened to each other act out and we worked together to create lego brick scenes.

A fun filled week in Year 1. I wonder what next week has in store! Will the Naughty Toy Box return?
