Year 1 News: Grace Darling and the RNLI
A super week in Year 1 has seen us become history detectives, word hunters and we even had a very special visitor come and talk to us!
In maths we focused on place value this week. We practised our counting and also looked at tens and units.
In History we investigated the story of Grace Darling. Children, can you tell your parents a fact about her? We've lived learning about her incredible story so far, we will then create a study work page to show our knowledge Grace's story.
In English this week we have got stuck into our class story. We've written character descriptions for Mr G and Mrs G. We then gave Mrs G an idea about how to keep the seagulls away from the lunch. Feeling left out, Hamish the cat asked if we could write a description about him, so we did! We also write questions to ask our visitor, we were very excited...
Our visitor turned out to be a RNLI lifeguard! He told us lots of stories and more importantly lots of safety advice! Children, can you tell your parents anything you've learned? Mark then let Maisie Kay, Seb and Ava-Lily dress up as lifeguards that you would see at the beach. He told us all about the flags at a beach and what they mean, whilst also demonstrating, with his wonderful assistants, Finn and Grace, how to use a lifebuoy! We then dressed up Will and discussed how the RNLI uniform has changed, children made very good links to Grace Darling and how she only had a rowboat and no equipment whatsoever!
We then moved into the hall to re-enact an RNLI rescue mission. George was in trouble in the water! He had to wave with one hand in the air and shout "HELP"! Maisie Lola was driving the lifeboat with her protective gear on! The boys; Will C, Thomas R and Leo used instruments to create rain and thunder sounds! And while the rest of the class were blowing to create the wind, Phoebe had to dial 999 on the mobile phone! It was very tense, but thanks to Maisie Lola the rescue mission was a success and George was safe!
We finally got to ask Mark some of the questions we had written in English earlier in the day. We had some fantastic questions for Mark; my favourite being "When do you get chance to eat?". A huge thank you to Mark who made our Thursday afternoon so special!
We also got to share our study work with parents and friends. It was lovely to see how excited and proud the children were in showing their work off.
Please adjust your head position for some of the pictures! :) (Technology 1 — Mr Dale 0)
Enjoy your, hopefully sunny (fingers crossed) bank holiday weekend!
