What a fantastic end to a wonderful week!

Year 1 had their Class Worship this afternoon and they were very proud of themselves for speaking confidently in front of the school. I was super proud of their performance and singing! The children were exceptionally happy with how their class poem sounded — which they read out in their Worship!

In English this week we have continued to listen and discuss a wide range of poems and stories. The focus this week has been on reading — comprehension. We have continued to develop good reading skills by listening to and discussing a wide range of stories. Year 1 have worked hard and participated in discussions, taking turns and listening to what others say and explaining clearly their understanding of what is read to them.

In Science we have continued to look at a variety of common and wild garden plants. We have explored these by reading poems about common and wild garden flowers, deciduous and evergreen trees. Year 1 have enjoyed a variety of books where the basic structure of a plant is explained through a poem.

We have linked our learning in Science with Art by looking at David Hockney's work. The children enjoyed drawing a summer landscape picture with lots of trees. We discussed what trees look like in different seasons.

Also, in art this week we have been looking at POP ART! We now know that Hockney was one of the big artists involved in pop art! We know how to colour a pop art portrait by using bright, bold colours!

Earlier in the week we finished our unit — fractions and have started securing our knowledge of counting in twos, fives and tens. Our class monkey has had a trip around our '100 circle' where we count by passing him to our neighbour who is also standing in our class circle! The children have worked well as a team by supporting each other and paying attention. Next week we will focus on solving addition and subtraction number sentences using objects and pictorial representations and missing number problems such as 7 = ___ — 9

In Design and Technology we have started designing and making Mr and Mrs Grindling's little white cottage! Photographs to follow in next weeks Year 1 Newsletter!

For homework, please continue to use MyMaths which is an interactive time-saving resource for use in the classroom and at home that is easy to use — MyMaths is used in class alongside other maths resources to consolidate learning. The children enjoy using MyMaths as a lesson starter, it enthuses the children and starts Maths lessons off in a fun and exciting way!

For English, please encourage your child to look at the year 1 common exception words (which are visited in class everyday during Phonics). Please find these words below:
the, a, do, to, today, of, said, says, are, were, was, is, his, has, I, you, your, they, be, he, me, she, we, no, go, so, by, my, here, there, where, love, come, some, one, once, ask, friend, school, put, push, pull, full, house, our.

Have a fabulous weekend!
