Year 1: Andy Goldsworthy inspired art!

Home » News » Year 1: Andy Goldsworthy

A very arty week in Year 1 has seen us become nature artists! We have been very inspired by our artist; Andy Goldsworthy. We have also continued with our addition and subtraction unit in Maths and have even become letter writers in English, what a week!

In English we discussed what a letter looked like. We investigated by reading letters and seeing what they all had. We noticed they all have 2 addresses on; we quickly discovered the first address is your own address and the next one is where you are sending it to! We found out how to start a letter and also that all letters need a closing farewell. Yours sincerely or yours faithfully, can you remember which was which, children? We then wrote our own letters to Mrs Rogers asking her all about Year 2 and even Mr. Grinling! On Friday we then thought about who has helped our learning this year and decided who to send a letter to. Children sent letters to Mrs. Casserely, the fire brigade, Mark the lifeguard, Steph and Ed from Chester Zoo and even 'The Naughty Bus' (now that does seem a long time ago!). Well done Year 1!

In Maths we continued to practise our taking away and adding. We did lots of looking at number sentences. We compared what an addition and a subtraction looks like. We quickly found out that when we add we always finish big; with our answer being a bigger number than what we started with. Whereas with a take away we start big; with the our answer always being smaller than our starting number!

In Art we completed a whole study work page all about our artist; Andy Goldsworthy. We completed a fact file, discussed his artwork and then got stuck in creating our own. We used shells and sand to create brilliant seaside artwork. We also went into the woodland area and created some fantastic nature art. It was amazing to see children applying their learning to create natural, creative and beautiful artwork in the style of Andy Goldsworthy; I can't wait for children to show them off in their study work books!

Have a super weekend,

Mr Dale
