Y6 Weekly News

Welcome back to you all and a warm welcome to our two new Y6 family members. We hope you have had a lovely first week.

We began our week by tackling our morning arithmetic calculations. We have also worked with squared and cubed numbers, orders of operations, brackets, and mental strategies to efficiently calculate answers quickly and accurately. We have enjoyed time on TT Rock Stars, and we have also completed our first arithmetic paper. Well done Y6.

In English this week, we have begun a new writing unit on biographies. From Sponge Bob, to pets, to family members, we began our week by having a go at writing our own biography. We then used my model and Talk 4 Writing picture plan to learn my piece by heart. Wow Y6. In four days you have learnt all 5 paragraphs with actions and punctuation too. We have had T4W battles and we will finish off with the final battle on Monday. Mrs Chesters has popped in to hear our recount and we will invite her to see our final round. We have created our biography toolkit from my Paddington Bear model, and we will use this carefully to guide our writing.

In Spellings this week we have continued to focus on the sh sound. Our sessions have used si and ssi as the spelling pattern to support our learning. We have also used ten more of our misconception words to understand their meaning.

Book Club this week has followed a new programme called Steps to Read. Our focus text has been a space non-fiction book and each day we have worked towards answering an anchor question. We have been introduced to new vocabulary and their definitions. Next week will be our reading with an adult week.

We continued with our Geography unit this week. We have considered how poverty is measured and thought about how we can compare the UK to Ethiopia. We looked at physical features and focused on these areas in our research: weather and climate, terrain/land, rivers/seas, natural resources and natural hazards. We will complete our unit by comparing human features next week.

We completed our first Science unit of our autumn term this week. We assessed our learning on inheritance, evolution and adaptation. From using Mr and Little Miss characters, to woolly mammoths and different habitats, we created offspring, new creatures and also thought about the way a modern day elephant could be linked to a woolly mammoth. We will begin a new Science unit soon.

We began our new RE focus this week. We are considering Incarnation and how this is shown through the work of an artist. First, we have thought about ourselves and what makes us who we are. We have then collated names of special people in Christianity. We will continue with our big question next week.

Our glockenspiel skills were certainly put to the test this week as we accompanied a jazz track. We broke the different parts down and carefully listened to the pitch of the track. We will continue this piece in our next music lesson.

PE and PHSE have also been taught this week by Mrs Jenkins.

Our first Forest Schools session took place this week and what a fantastic time we all had. From den building to lighting fires, we thoroughly enjoyed our time outside learning these new skills. The weather held out for us, although please ensure children do have layers to keep them warm. I will be wearing a woolly hat next week!

During Mindful Monday we took advantage of a windy day and went outside to blow bubbles. We thought about our aspirations and what makes us who we are. Today was our Y6 Worship. Our Fundraisers took the lead and spread the message about Operation Christmas. They reminded children to bring in their shoe boxes and introduced Comic Relief. Thank you Y6.
