Y6 News of the Week

In Maths this week we have continued with our fractions unit by adding and subtracting mixed and improper fractions. Our fractions journey is coming along nicely as children use their factor and multiple knowledge to solve more complex calculations. Well done Y6.

We have begun narrative writing in English by rehearsing a spoken piece of text to develop our writing skills. This spoken piece has illustrations to support our retelling and we have added actions, along with expression. Our story is a disappointment story which we have acted out and recorded to enable us to review it. We will develop this genre further next week.

Our Book Club sessions this week have concentrated on our new Collins Big Cat structure. I have read with all children this week using their new read aloud books. Questions have been set in their reading response books and will be reviewed next week. Please note there is a booklet explaining this new structure in your child's folder.

Spelling and grammar this week focused on the patterns and rules of the shus sound. This sound is made up of different suffixes, eg. tious and cious. We are beginning to understand when to use each one.

We continued with our textiles unit in DT this week by using our templates and chalk to mark and cut out our felt poppies. We have all begun our chosen stitches to match our reviewed designs. They are very impressive, and we will take pride of place on our front covers of our studywork books.

Our History and DT continued this week as we used rationed foods to bake war-time digestives. We all used the same recipe to work in small groups beginning with a calculating task. Converting imperial measurements into metric and then using this information to collect and weigh our ingredients. Discussions around adding extra toppings enabled us to realise that rationed foods meant just that. No sugary toppings sorry Y6! We are very proud of the results and hope you enjoyed the produce. Even if a pinch of salt was not really a pinch! We are looking forward to sharing your offerings on Friday. Grandparents please don't have a big lunch.!

In our Science lesson this week we continued with our topic on light. We created rays of incidence and rays of reflection using torches, cards and mirrors We will measure the angles using protractors next week. Thank you for all the cereal boxes, they will come in handy when we make our periscopes. We will use our knowledge that light travels in straight lines to understand how a periscope works.

Miss Holland split her music lesson into two halves this week as Y6 rehearsed their wartime songs and their anti-bullying raps. Both are sounding super.

In RE this week we continued to investigate Incarnation. We looked at the Mystic Nativity by Sandro Botticelli to discuss the scene of the birth of Jesus.

Just a reminder about our exciting Theme Day, children are to come in their 1940s outfits and to bring in their rationed baking. Grandparents are welcomed from 2pm when afternoon tea will be served. Our dancing and singing will come to an end between 2.45pm and 3pm. If there are any parents that are happy to help in the afternoon, I would very much appreciate it. I'm afraid it will be to man the kitchen and support children in making hot drinks. We are looking forward to seeing all Grandparents.

We have begun this week to rehearse the songs that are included in our Christmas service. Our choir have taken on some of the verses and we hope you can join us in church on Thursday 19th December at 10.30am to celebrate our service with us. We have run through our Christmas service words this week in a practice too. If your child has words, please could you spend a little time listening to a recital of them. Some readings are quite lengthy, and your support would very much be appreciated. Thank you.

Formal Friday did not take place this week as we have already sat many end of term assessments. New homework is to prepare an item(s) for our Theme Day. There is no other homework set for this week. During today we have looked at our Maths assessments and worked through any errors we may have had in the arithmetic paper. We will continue to review our assessments next week.

We have taken part in the Reindeer Run today wearing our antlers and red noses in support of St Luke's Hospice. If you still have your donations, please could they be in on Monday.

Another amazing week Y6. You are working so hard and I am always proud of you. It is amazing how much we fit into our week. When I come to write each week's website, I am astounded by how much we have managed to pack in!

The final thing I would like to say is to wish all my children that have been poorly this week a speedy recovery. We have missed you all and hope you are back on your feet soon.
