Well... Santa had to learn some new skills this year. He and his elves magically sent each class a...
Y6 New of the Week
Another busy week of learning in Year 6.
We continued with our multiplication and division unit this week. We calculated different fluency problems using different strategies to try and find the method that best suits each of us. We multiplied and divided using factors and then went on to divide using groups of 10. This strategy will lead us nicely into long division next week.
In English we fully edited our diary extracts and then began preparing for our new letter writing unit. We watched a documentary on the real-life experiences of an evacuee from Wales. We also revisited the film Goodnight Mr. Tom and we recorded our knowledge on evacuees. Next week we will role play the events of an evacuee leaving home for the first time to allow us to walk in their footsteps. We will discuss the format and features of letters and analyse my written model.
Our SpaG focus this week has been on verbs and adverbs.
This week in Book Club we have focused on performance poetry. We discussed what makes a good piece of poetry and watched poems being performed. From this we then considered how we could perform an alternative ending to the Three Little Pigs — a poem written by Roald Dahl in his revolting rhymes collection. We worked in small groups to perform each stanza in the most expressive way. We have recorded our version and it will be posted for you to enjoy on our YouTube channel. Children learnt all their lines in three days! I am super impressed.
In Science this week we have used scientific symbols to draw accurate circuits. We used pictures to convert into scientific symbols and then used this new knowledge to create complete circuits. Motors, cells, batteries, switches, wires were all new scientific symbols for us in Y6 this week.
We continued our Geography unit this week as we learnt about Operation Pied Piper. We used our atlas skills to locate the cities and counties that were used during WW2 by evacuees. We then went on to challenge ourselves to think of other unsafe locations and tried to evacuate people to new safer place to live.
In Art this week we focused on Karl Johnson's cutting techniques as we tried to create profile pictures of our classmates. We have also chosen our Blitz scene to create our skyline foreground, which we will work on next week.
In Computing this week, we have used the Code Studio programme. We have shared our knowledge and skills to support each other when solving different algorithms.
In French this week we completed our unit on classroom instructions. We completed a written task and then used this to support paired spoken instructions.
We finished our week with formal Friday. We completed a times tables test and reviewed our arithmetic paper. New homework has been set. This includes: Spag online tasks (2), TT Rock Stars battle and regular reading aloud with comprehension style questions being asked (sample questions are printed in the front of each reading diary).
An inter-house TT Rockstars competition is underway. It has been set for this weekend and will finish on Sunday at 4.30pm. There will be a further battle set to determine the overall winner. I would like all my children to log on and play for their house team. I know I have some speedy rockstars amongst you, remember every little helps! Your MyMaths log in details will give you access to this site.
Have a super weekend superstars of Y6.
