So...what a couple of weeks! This weeks news is last weeks and this weeks combined after technical...
Y5 Weekly News
Another week has raced by and we now only have 9 days left together!
This week, the John Muir award saw us exploring the grounds at our school. We replicated the activities from last week at the Moss, using our pond investigation skills and bug hunting abilities. We discovered stark differences and soon realised that Wybunbury Moss was a much better habitat for lots of wildlife. On Monday the 16th of July we will be showing off all we have learnt throughout our sessions with a sharing assembly to parents. The children have been very busy this week planning and preparing their assembly coming up, with all sorts of brilliant and wonderful ideas going into it. We hope that you'll be able to join us in what is sure to be an exciting assembly.
In maths we looked at a new concept called volume we thought about how we could calculate volume knowing that height, length and depth was the way forward. We calculated and also estimated volume, this led us to be able to answer some very tricky reasoning problems, well done everybody. On Friday we completed our last ever maths test in year 5, we were fantastic at using all the knowledge and skills that we've learnt this year and applying them within different questions.
In R.E we completed the final piece to our study work page. We were able to successfully tell the process of confirmation and build a story through our our artwork. We described the five different components of a confirmation, it was lovely to see children using religious terminology and producing such beautiful artwork at the same time.
On Friday we had the treat of being able to visit our buddies down in preschool. We had an absolute blast and it was lovely to see every single year 5 member being so responsible and caring for not only their own buddies but for other children too. We also like to say thank you to Tara, Libby, Mrs Clinton and Miss O'Neill for letting us share their classroom.
In science we started on new unit on the properties of materials. We talked about what a property of a material actually meant and look for a definition. We learnt some new terminology like translucent and opaque. We then got to business and conducted our own experiments to test different materials and their properties. We thought about the best test to use and in doing so we tested are different materials for absorbency, transparency and flexibility (we thought it best not to test whether a material was flammable or not and instead just estimated!).
On Friday we went football mad and in an event organised by School Council we completed crossbar challenges, took penalties and some of us even played in a match all to raise money for Team Lewis — thank you Miss Holland for organising the event it was fantastic.
Have a fantastic weekend,
Mr Dale
