A busy week in year 5.

In Maths this week we have completed our fraction investigations and used our knowledge to tackle our end of unit assessment.

In English we began our new unit — descriptive writing. Using music (to create a scary ambiance) and pictures we created useful word banks and also ordered our final top ten descriptive words. We have gone on to use these word banks to write descriptively about a demon bear. We have focused on creating the correct atmosphere, thinking about our audience and how we want them to feel.

We have had our first poetry sharing session today. Thank you to our audience, we hope you enjoyed our powerful poems.

During book club this week we have focused on separating fact from opinion. We have looked for different words within a sentence that help us with this skill.

We continued this week to focus on the Stone Age settlement of Skara Brae. We have created a floor plan showing all of the dwellings and other buildings. We will now watercolour our plan and add further detail.

We have begun a new Science unit this week — properties and changes of materials. We recapped our previous learning on solids, liquids and gases and then went on to look at how the hardness of a material is measured. We read information on Friedrich Mohs and his scale of hardness. We will now test this scale by using our own experiments.

PE this week focused on netball skills and we continue to work on teamwork. Thank you to Mrs Casserley and Mr Cornes for taking our class swimming again. Our Samba music lessons are sounding great. We are working towards our final piece.

Have a fantastic weekend.

Mrs B.
