Y5 News of the Week

I am so proud of our achievements this week in Y5. We have been extremely busy and focused.

In Maths this week we continued to investigate fractions, we changed improper fractions into whole numbers, added and subtracted fractions with different denominators and we also found fractions of amounts. We will continue with this area next week.

In English we used our word banks effectively to create powerful poetry based on our novel and WH Auden's poem. We have also watched various spoken poetry and performed some of our own. Mrs Casserley popped in to watch our performances and enjoyed the different pieces. We are now preparing to read our own poems to an audience.

During book club this week we have focused on different pieces of poetry. We have enjoyed pieces that play with words and create an image in our minds.

We have immersed ourselves this week in the Stone Age period of history. We began by looking into early Stone Age settlements across the world and then focused on Great Britain. Using our atlases, we located and plotted as many British settlements as we could. Skara Brae in the Orkney Islands is now our main focus. We have watched different footage on this settlement and read about it too. We finished our week off with a Skara Brae class quiz.

Our cave art is now complete and has pride of place on our display. It has created a fabulous feature in our classroom.

PE this week focused on basketball skills and teamwork. Our swimming lessons have resumed, thank you to Mrs Casserley and Mr Cornes for taking our class. Our Samba music lessons have also resumed this week.

Have a fantastic weekend and enjoy the snow if we are lucky to get some.

Mrs B.
