Y5 news of our week
We have had another busy week in Y5.
In Maths this week we have concentrated on column addition and subtraction. We have used our knowledge to problem solve including two and three step word problems. We have spent time carefully looking at the questions and deciding what we are actually being asked to calculate. Our week ended with an assessment of our skills.
This week In English, we have completed our demon bear description, concentrating on creating an eerie image in the mind of the reader and ensuring our piece had impact. Our description enabled us to sketch a pencil drawing of the bear ready to complement our writing.
We have now begun a new unit in English — summarising. This type of writing is new to our class and we began by summarising the key points to the well-known tale, The Three Little Pigs. Today we re-read the first chapter of our class read in preparation for next week when we will use new skills to summarise the main points.
During Book Club this week, we have focused on Poetry, analysing the style and construction of a poem. We used this style to answer word level questions.
We have continued this week with our Science unit, Living Things and investigated the growth of a human. This week we have focused on our own timelines and the milestones we have achieved along the way, some very interesting suggestions. We have also begun a group investigation to consider different possibilities in our growth. Could there be a link between our heights, length of feet, arm span or head size? Now we have taken our measurements we need to calculate the ratios to help us to make our decisions.
We finished our week off with our usual Friday testing. Just a quick reminder, the statutory spellings will be tested during the last week of this half term.
Hope you have a lovely weekend.
Mrs Burns.
