A fun-filled week in Y5.

In Maths this week, we have continued to investigate place value in decimals and money. We have used our knowledge to calculate problems understanding the value of each decimal place. We have counted within a certain range of numbers, using 1, 2 and 3 decimal places as our focus.

In English this week we have edited our tower descriptions to improve our writing for the reader. We have also begun a new English unit — persuasive writing. We used our debating skills to debate in our class chamber the motion — it is good to be famous. We thoroughly enjoyed being speakers and using our persuasive skills to convince each other. We have also looked at the persuasive techniques used in adverts, discussing the impact the advert has and who the audience could be. We have then gone on to create a class persuasive phrase bank ready to include in our own writing next week.

This week In Book Club we have continued with our daily activities and working with a thesaurus and dictionary. We have used the second part of our well-known tale to develop rich vocabulary. Lots of us have completed crosswords in our silent reading time and we are working hard on our handwriting too.

We have begun our History unit this week on Ancient Greece; mind mapping the facts we already know and creating post it notes for things we would like to find out. The four different eras of this history period were introduced in the form of a layered cake. The layers demonstrated nicely the changes seen on Greek pottery, we have each made a piece of clay pottery and will have a go at creating our own artefacts next week.

In music this week, we have compared rock anthems, Don't Stop Believing by Journey to Living on a Prayer by Jon Bon Jovi. We have continued to look at the diction and how each word is sung. Netball defending skills were practised in PE and of course we have ended our week with our swimming lesson.

Just a quick note to let you know that our Library is open daily during lunchtime, your child is able to exchange their reading books during this time.

I hope you have a fantastic weekend.

Mrs B.
