Y5 News
Full steam ahead this week in year 5.
In Maths this week we have spent some time working through our fractions and addition and subtraction assessment papers. We have identified our strengths and edited our areas to improve on. We have then gone on to recap our skills in number and place value. We have completed word problems, worked on sequencing, negative numbers and rounding. We finished our week off by playing Roman numeral pointless.
In English we continued to work on our journal recounts. We developed direct and reported speech using our play scripts and then went on to recount from our recorded interviews. We used the 5 W's and time connectives to carefully recount the events.
During book club this week we continued to focus on newspaper reports. We used a First News report on an incident found in the category of crazy but true. The comprehension questions needed us to deduce and infer and continued to develop our skills of reading between the lines.
We have published our poetry and bear descriptions this week in our study workbooks. We are very proud of our results.
In our Science unit — properties and changes of materials we reflected on last week's experiments and discussed our findings. We then took part in another afternoon of experiments. This week we focused on the property of solubility. We used different products to test their solubility in water. After predicting the results, we then recorded our findings like true scientists. I am pleased with how mature our class worked, we all managed to test 10 different products with interest and care. Well done Y5.
In RE this week we have talked about the Hindu circle of life and how it differs from ours. We then went on to discuss and mind map how we welcome babies into our world. Next week we will compare our celebrations to those of a Hindu baby.
PE this week focused on teamwork and I know our class enjoyed a great game of dodgeball.
Our class also enjoyed their last swimming lesson this week. A very big thank you to Mrs Casserley and Mr Cornes for sparing the time to take us each week.
Our Samba music lessons have continued. This week our class focused on performance as we watched different bands performing.
I hope everyone enjoyed the Festival of Lights disco tonight and hope you all have a fantastic weekend.
