We have had a super week filled with lots of different special treats!
First of all, this week our phonics journey in year one started on Monday morning. We have all been very excited about having 'Fred the frog' in our classroom who is helping us to learn our new sounds. Every morning we go to our phonics sessions in our small groups and learn our set 1 or set 2 sounds. We have also been applying our phonics knowledge during reading sessions with our brand new books. I am super proud of all of the reading you are doing at home and in school. I can already see how full your reading diaries are getting and it is amazing. If anyone has completed the summer reading challenge then please bring in your certificates so I can take a picture of you and give you 25 marbles.
In maths this week we have been working super hard at place value to 10. We have been exploring one more, one less and comparing groups of objects. Today we looked at using the more than, less than and equals to symbols to compare numbers. We enjoyed snapping up the greater numbers and gobbling them up. The children are also given a problem solving question each lesson to solve and we are enjoying being a part of the maths problem and acting it out with our amazing mathematician and drama skills.
In English we started the week with a reading comprehension to see if we could answer questions about the 'hundred decker bus.' The children loved having their own copy of the book so that they could look for the answers and we focused on writing our answers in full sentences. We have been looking at the main character in the story who we have called 'Dave the bus driver.' We have used role play in our English and talked about what questions we would ask the bus driver about what happened in the story. We used a hot seating activity where some of us became the bus driver. The rest of us were the passengers and had to ask our questions that we had prepared. We then wrote some of the questions in our books remembering our question marks at the end. At the end of the week we used a character feelings graph to look at how the bus driver was feeling at different parts of the story. We then wrote these emotions on the whiteboard. I was astounded by some of the language we are using in Y1 as some of the children were using words such as 'irritated' and 'frustrated' to describe how the bus driver felt when his bus had broken down.
In R.E this week we have continued to look at the good news that Jesus would share. We looked back on the previous parable that you were taught in reception 'the good Samaritan' and how this shows the Christian value of 'kindness.' Each group used a Christian value to show how Jesus would share this as good news. We then went outside to make freeze frames so that we could see the good news in action. We had children showing goodness as helping each other with their work, we had children showing kindness through helping a friend that had fallen over and we also showed love by hugging our friends. We loved creating our own freeze frames and sharing these with the whole class.
In Science this week we have been material detectives as we went on an exciting material hunt where we had to look around the school and outside for objects that are made from different materials. We identified the material and then made a tally chart so we could keep record of all the different materials found. I think one group found 30 objects that were made out of wood- WOW!
In computing we were very lucky to have a special treat as we had a company called 'Now press play' come to visit us. It was so exciting because all of the children became a part of a story that was being played to them through a pair of wireless headphones. It really helped to teach us more about our topic of transport.
On Monday afternoon in music we continued our work on rap music. The children have a great 'rap attitude' and are learning our song quickly and in their own style. In drama the children looked at what had changed over the summer holidays. The children are also looking forward to having Mrs Clinton joining us on Monday afternoons to do some sewing.
In Geography, the children looked at their journey to school. They drew pictures of what they see and identified it as either a physical or human feature of Geography. We have also continued to look at capital cities and the transport that we see in each of these cities.
We then finished our busy but brilliant week with a mystery reader! Thank you ever so much for coming to read with y1 we didn't stop laughing from the start of the book to the end. Every Friday I will also give one superstar child the naughty bus to take home so that you can write about your very own adventures over the weekend. Well done to our first person who received this today.
Have a fantastic weekend and see you all on Monday morning!
