Welcome back Year 6

Welcome back everyone! We hope you have had a fun-filled summer break.

Our day began with a quick chat from Mrs Chesters and I to welcome you to Year 6 and talk briefly about how our week will run.

We then wasted no time in making a start on our new learning journey.

We discussed the title of our new novel 'Exodus' by Julie Bertagna. Had we heard the word before? Could we explain its meaning? Then we read the very powerfully worded prologue and discussed how it made us feel and what it suggested. It is certainly a dramatic start to a story.

During worship, we were presented with our Year 6 responsibility badges and are wearing them with a great deal of pride.

Next, we made a noun tower, learning and revising some grammar terminology (Noun, adjective, determiner, prepositional phrase, clause...) and using the tower to write powerful sentences. We will use these in descriptive writing next week.

In science this afternoon, we considered the meaning of scientific terminology: Evolution and Inheritance. Can you remember what the terms mean, and how their meaning differs?

We watched a video all about Charles Darwin and The Origin of the Species, and then we made models of some unusual creatures, making 2 parent insects and an offspring which had inherited some features from both the male and female parent. We will develop this work on Monday next week.

At the end of the day we read more of Exodus and were introduced to some of the key characters. I wonder where the story will take us next?

More details of our autumn term learning journey will be sent out soon, including our holistic plan and newsletter.

It's been a great start to a new year, and you are all brimming with enthusiasm! Wonderful.

Miss Lake and Mrs Chesters
