Welcome back Year 3! Happy New Year!

I hope you've been excited to get back to school and start your new learning journey.

This term, we will use the fantastic story 'Kensuke's Kingdom'.

"I disappeared on the night before my twelfth birthday. July 28th 1988. Only now can I at last tell the whole extraordinary story, the true story...."

Newsletters and holistic plans have already been sent home with y3 children so please do check book bags if you haven't yet seen a copy!

We've dived straight in to the spring term, beginning with our Big Art day on Monday when we learned about the skill of collage making and, after watching a fascinating video clip all about the Great Barrier Reef, made our own coral collages and 3d coral reefs.

We've been busy finding out all about atlases, globes and maps. We've learned about lines of Latitude and Longitude, The Equator, tropics of Capricorn and Cancer and can explain how countries closer to the poles are temperate, whist those closer to the equator are tropical! We can name the 7 continents and 5 oceans too.

In English, we wrote fantastic descriptions of stormy seas, using noun phrases to add detail. In maths, we've worked on properties of shape, adding new maths words to our vocabulary such as: vertical, horizontal, parallel, perpendicular, acute, obtuse and right angle!

Homework books will be sent home with children on Monday, when there will be new weekly and half term spellings, SPaG, and latest times tables scores. This homework will be due in on Monday 18th January. New Mymaths will be set on Monday too. Our first times tables test of the spring term will take place next Friday.

This topic and book is my all time favourite. It is an action-packed but moving tale and helps us to understand the meaning of friendship. I'm sure you will all enjoy the story and I know exploring sea life and coral reefs will capture your imagination, especially after our visit to The Blue Planet. More details of this soon...

Have a lovely weekend. Michael's adventure continues next week...
