Welcome Back Y3!

Home » News » Welcome Back Y3!

Wow Year 3! What an amazing first week we have had back after Christmas. Full of longships, ancient runes and shields, you have certainly taken our new Viking topic head on! It's been great to see all of the enthusiasm for our topic already and of course of class book, How to Train Your Dragon!

Our week started with BIG ART and we managed to do lots of art throughout the week too! Our first task was to learn all about a Viking's best friend, his/her's shield! We learnt lots of new facts and ways in which people thought they used them in battle, some people think they were used even as stretchers to carry the injured! We then got to designing our own shields, using traditional Viking patterns and colours too! We then create mini shields with oil pastels from our favourite design, we would later put these on our longship! Some children even create huge shields too! Check them out!
We made our longship from corrugated card and mixed paints to get the perfect wooden brown colour! We attached our shields and some of us create the dragon figurehead. We researched and labelled longships along the way too!
Next up in our series of BIG ART, we looked at runes and learnt that Vikings used to use these symbols to label their belongings like their swords! We created rune name-tags for our study work front covers and also created secret rune messages which we have written on our ship!

In English this week we have been looking at different sentence types! We learnt all about 2A sentences, which needs two adjectives and a comma. Next up was BOYS sentences, looking at how we can use connectives in our writing. We also looked at 'ed' starters and similes too! We will use these in our descriptive writing next week! We were also busy this week designing our own Viking warrior, who we will be able to use in our stories that we write this term! Fearsome Freya the Third, Savage Sam the Second and even a gruesome Viking named Stormfly were but a few warriors we were able to come up with and write character descriptions for this week! We thought about appearance, personality and what kind of character they might be!

In Maths this week we have dipped our toes into our brand new Power Maths work and have started our new unit on multiplication and division. We compared multiplication statements and reasoned as to whether they were greater than, less than or equal to. Next up we looked at related multiplication statements and times tables that are shared, for example 8 x 3 and 6 x 4! And finally we were introduced to TT Rockstars new game mode that lets you win loads more coins! I hope to see lots of children playing this week, don't forget that it is our inter-house competition this weekend too!

In Art we focused our attention on dragon eyes. We spoke about the intricate details of the pupil and scales. We also talked about pencil shading and how to create depth in our eye. These now sit pride of place on our BIG ART Study Work page!

In History we have of course been looking into the Vikings. Our focus within our first lesson was on the Viking timeline. We asked the question — When did the Vikings arrive in Britain? We found out the answer was probably 787 AD when they first invaded our lands!

Have a fantastic weekend!

Mr Dale
