This week in Year 1

Home » News » This week in Year 1

We were very proud of everyone who took part in our colourful Harvest service on Thursday. Thank you to all of you who were able to join us.

Our Literacy focus this week has been all about characters. We have looked at the Supertato stories by Sue Hendra and talked about characters, writing their names and describing what they are like. We begun the week writing sentences, then we watched a sentence story song to help us think about our sentences in more detail. We are also working hard to practise our letter formation to develop beautiful formation, well done Year 1.

Moving on to Numeracy, our focus has linked to learning more about the symbols + for more, — for less and = equals. Pictures of crocodiles then appeared, and we soon got to know that these crocodiles are greedy and always like to eat the biggest number. 'Crocodile, crocodile, what do you eat....the biggest number, the largest number, look at me!' Creating our own crocodiles was fun as we used blocks first, then pictures and last of all numbers. I was really impressed when we worked as a class to solve a problem using < and >.

Our afternoons have given us chance to learn more about colleting weather information. We talked about how rain makes us feel and then worked together to think about how to measure how much rain falls. We then looked at how our rain collectors and thought about how we can set them up in the garden. What a great set of rain collectors, year 1, I am looking forward to seeing how much rain has been collected. Later on we looked at how we can record how much rain falls using a block graph. It was great to incorporate some Numeracy into our Science learning.

A busy week in Year 1. A week full of independence, team work and problem solving.

I hope you are all having a great weekend,
Mrs Pointon
