Science Week in Year 1...

Home » News » Science Week in Year 1...

What a scientific week we have had in Year 1, from space to Sir Isaac Newton we have explored so much around our topic of forces!

We started our Science Week by exploring gravity, we watched videos of real life spacemen and women and even saw how they brush their teeth in space, and it was very funny! We then talked about if our classroom had reduced gravity and thought that we would have a lot of pencils floating in the air! We then designed and built our own paper aeroplanes and had a competition as to who could defy gravity for the longest, but unfortunately what comes up must come down! We also found out that the world record flight for a paper aeroplane is 14 seconds, could you beat this at home?

On Tuesday it was then our trip, which we absolutely loved! We got lots of scientific information from our zookeepers, Steph and Ed, so a big thank you to them!

On Wednesday we had a very special visitor, we couldn't believe it when a real life scientist walked through our classroom door! Mr. Tibbets gave us a brilliant lesson on floating and sinking and told us all about the forces which effect this. We made predictions and then carried out our own investigations about which objects would float. We then had to help Mr. Tibbets with his boat and had to decide which the best material for his boat was! Finally, Mr Tibbets taught us a very clever and cool trick with an orange, children can you show this to somebody at home (it is very impressive)?

On Thursday we had a very special treat, the star lab came to school! We were amazed by the huge dome and got very excited when we had to climb and crawl into the tunnel! The show that Mr Tibbets gave us was spectacular with children giving lots of gasps and wows; it was great to see our class so involved and intrigued by science and our solar system.
A huge thank you to Mr Tibbets who was brilliant in both his lesson and with the star lab and a thank you to Miss Lake who organised a very enjoyable science week for everybody involved!

It has been a truly fantastic week and all I can say is roll on Science Week 2018!

Have a fantastic weekend,

Mr Dale
