RSPB Big School Bird Watch

Home » News » RSPB Big School Bird Watch

As a school we have thoroughly enjoyed taking part in RSPB Big School Bird Watch this week. Each class took part by observing birds in our environment and by creating a tally of how many birds they saw. .

We prepared the grounds with bird feeders and it was great to hear the buzz from the children as they explored the school grounds. Reception were very excited to find a house sparrow nest near their class door.

A huge thank you to Mrs Tibbetts who enhanced our Bird Watch week by providing sessions for children in Years 1-6. These hands on sessions were carefully planned and gave us an insight into the eating habits of all sorts of birds. One session involved finding out about how an owl eats, and being detectives to uncover what an owl may eat by dissecting an owl pellet. The older child were able to investigate how birds have adapted so much so to find out which shaped beak works best for a specific type of food shape.

Year 6 have kindly offered to collate our results over the next week or so. Last year the top three birds spotted across the country were the house sparrow, starling and blue tit. I wonder how this year's results will compare.

Thank you to our Wybunbury Delves Environment Officers who have promoted this week and created resources for different classes to use. A great team approach Wybunbury Delves, we will be in touch soon to announce our school results.

If you have taken part at home, I hope you have had as much enjoyment as we have this week.

Mrs Pointon
