To begin our week in Year 6, we read through our PGL recounts, making final edits, and then presented them for study work. Our writing will be on the PGL display in class and also in our study work books so that they can be shared with you when our Exodus books come home.

In Science on Monday, we learned about Classification. Can you remember why a universal classification system is so important for identifying species? First we discussed the term classification so that we were all clear about our learning job. Next, we created our own classification system to group vertebrates and invertebrates. We then focused on vertebrates and learned that there are 5 kingdoms, and that all vertebrates belong to one of them. We learned about the observable features which are used to group them. We then used a classification key to group mammals, fish, amphibians, reptiles and birds correctly. It was trickier than we thought. Can you remember why a blue whale is a mammal not a fish? Is a jellyfish actually a fish at all?

Today, we completed SPAG and spelling activities and then we began our work on persuasive writing. For the next 2 weeks in English we will be working on a persuasive speech to convince the people of Wing that it is now time to leave their island and go in search of the New World. We worked in groups to brainstorm the most pressing issues for the islanders. We decided that there were many, and that we would need to put them in order of importance for our speech writing. We also watched a speech by a 12 year old girl who had travelled from Canada to Brazil to address delegates from the United Nations to share her concerns about Global Warming. George said "That was very powerful, Miss Lake"...and we even gave her an impromptu round of applause in class!

We enjoyed sharing our Harvest celebration with you in church this afternoon.
