PE Round Up
PE has seen us covering a variety of sporting skills.
We began with a gymnastics unit. Our focus was balance and counter- balance and sequences in pairs and groups. We started creating balances on small apparatus which were linked with imaginative ways of travelling. We then added large apparatus, including the big blue wall bars, to extend our sequences.
We followed our gymnastics with team building and orienteering.
We began team building by playing games such as 'the human knot', 'the hoop' and our favourite 'the human seat'! We played games involving map keys, reading maps and finding hidden clues while practising running. We finished the unit with an orienteering competition, using a map of the school grounds to find markers with letters that, when unscrambled, created a sentence.
After Easter we had a four week athletics unit.
We began each lesson with sustained running. Our aim was to run at our own pace, not that of someone else. We did it without walking and aimed to run a bit further each week. The children were brilliant at this and most found it easier and more enjoyable when they focused on their own running. We recapped the track and field skills we already knew and added a few new ones! We set up stations and rotated around them all during the lessons. We practised long jump, triple jump, high jump, javelin, bean bag throw for year 2, shot, relay, sprint, hurdles, skipping and bean bag.
Summer term 2 has seen us introduced to Tri Golf.
We have used 'putters' and 'chippers' to learn how to putt straight, curve a ball, chip over and into targets, all the time trying to improve our accuracy.
We are now working on our cricket skills. We are trying to improve our accuracy in throwing, learning and improving our over arm bowling and finding ways of batting to all sides, so we can find gaps in opposing teams fielding.
Hopefully, if the weather is kind, we will move on to rounders at the end of the term!
