Our week in Year 2

Home » News » Year 2 news

This week in Year 2, we have finished our sewing project off and worked on the rest of our front covers. We can't wait for you to see them. Thank you again to all the parents who came in to help. We think they look brilliant!

We have been thinking about our nativity story in our English lessons this week, called Children of the World. We have been learning about different traditions in Christian countries, mainly Poland and Australia from our nativity story. We learnt that in Australia, the children have a Christmas 'barbie' on the beach because it is the middle of summer and that father Christmas arrives on a surf board! How cool! Our English focus this week was to use connectives such as because, and, so, but to join sentences together. We had fun making our fact books using these connectives. We have also been editing our work with our special editing glasses, which help us to focus on checking our work! Once we had edited our work, it was ready to write up for study work. We were impressed with how much our handwriting had improved in the last few weeks.

In our maths lessons this week we have been completing our end of term assessments. Some of the questions were really tricky but no one gave up, we used our strategies like our tens and ones to help us with the adding calculations. I was also very impressed with maths homework this week, especially those children who had gone ahead and done extra addition calculations, wow!

In phonics, my group worked on 'le' ending in words and Mrs Parker's group worked on the 'ur/er' sounds. This week will be assessment week to see how well we have retained all of our new sounds from this term. There are no new spellings but please keep practising spelling patterns we have already visited from this term, especially those ones you know you find a bit tricky!

In the afternoons this week we have finished our food chain science unit for our study work and we have been comparing city Vs village maps in geography, looking at aerial views of different maps and spotting similarities and differences between the two. We will continue with this work next week.

On Friday we finished our week off by a visit from the big man himself, Father Christmas. The children were beautifully behaved and enjoyed their time in the fabulous grotto.

I hope you are enjoying your weekend.

Miss McCurrie
