Our first week in year 3

Home » News » Our first week in year 3

Year 3 have had a very busy first few days...

We continued our work in science, dissecting flowers carefully to find all the main parts (Stem, sepal, style, stigma, ovary, filament, anther...). You can see us busy with our work in one of the photos. Miss Lake thought we were super scientists. We also began diagrams of a flowering plant and carefully labelled them.

Today, we completed our 'Big Art' tasks. We used a technique called pointillism to create sky backgrounds and then chose buttons to complete our work. The finished art work can also be seen in the photos and soon it will be displayed in class.

We also began to look at the work of Piet Mondrian and we painted textured backgrounds for a version of his 'Grey Tree' painting. We will complete them next week.

We learned how to use sketching pencils properly and used this new skill to draw trees, using shading to add detail, and very careful observation. Examples can be seen in the photos too.

We continued with our class novel, Robin of Sherwood, and now Robin has joined the Outcasts in Sherwood Forest. We will use the story next week in English to write descriptions of a storm.

On Monday of next week, children will be introduced to our book club routine and homework will be set and sent home. I will email with a more detailed explanation as there are new tasks to complete this year.

We will also continue to work on place value in maths and Mymaths homework will be set which helps the children to consolidate their learning.

I really hope the children have enjoyed their first few days. I've enjoyed getting to know them all a little better and am delighted that they are so keen and willing. It has been a great start.

Have a lovely weekend.

Miss Lake
