Our day out at Stockley Farm Y2

Home » News » Our day out at Stockley Farm Y2

In year 2 we started our week by looking at writing instructions. First, we looked at the features of a few different types of instructions. We realised they sounded quite bossy so we had to enrol Little Miss Bossy to help us out. We found out that those bossy words had a posh name called 'imperative verbs' so we said them in a posh voice! We made a word bank of the bossy words we had learnt and listened to a funny song too (the imperative verbs song on YouTube). We then read the story How to Wash a Wooly Mammoth and decided to write our own instructions on How to Wash Gladys the Pig (we met her at the farm!) We used our own bossy verbs and included top tips. They were very funny and I was impressed! Well done for trying so hard year 2.

We really enjoyed our visit to Stockley Farm, please watch our video for all about our day including feeding the goats, meeting the pigs, visiting pet corner, sheep racing, and learning all about the milking parlour.

This week our spellings focus has been the 'ar' sound. We have worked hard and some children were excited when they spotted these sounds in their reading books. Next week's sound is oi/oy and have been stuck in your books. At the end of the week we will do our individual phonics assessment too for this half term.

In maths we have been working on addition and subtraction. We were introduced to tens and ones counters to help us when adding or taking away two numbers. You can make these counters at home to help you if you like. The yellow counters are worth ten and the green counters are worth ones. They really helped us, especially when adding and taking away ten from a two digit number. We also used numicon and dienes to help us. What did you choose to help you? We have worked really hard in maths this week and some children even chose to stay in at the beginning of lunch time to carry on with an extra challenge...what fantastic learning attitudes we have!

In the afternoons we continued our science unit on habitats and looked at micro habitats around our school field. What did you discover? In our computing lessons we continued with our PowerPoints this week adding photos and backgrounds alongside our text and animations. We are hoping to be finished this week and would like to share these with you one evening after school. Watch this space!

Mr Turner, our new PE teacher has been really impressed with our listening skills in PE which has made me very proud.

I hope you have had a lovely weekend.

Miss McCurrie
