Our 'animal - tastic' week in Year 1

Home » News » Year 1 News

Our week in Year 1 has been full of animal activities.

The highlight of our week was our Animal theme day on Thursday. We arrived at school dressed as tigers, zebras, cows, wild cats, leopards, snakes, reindeer and dinosaurs. As a class we read the story the Tiger who came to tea as a choral story and it proved how much we love this story. The expression and actions were fantastic. We then worked in teams to create our own real life animal scenes. We worked together to think about how we would act if we were a real animal. I couldn't stop taking photos of all of you. The rest of the morning was spent looking for birds in our environment as part of the RSPB Big School Bird Watch. As a class we spotted blackbirds, wood pigeons, sparrows, a robin and a crow. In the afternoon our thoughts changed to creating a tea party. We decided what our favourite sandwich filling was and we then prepared our sandwich before setting up the classroom for our real tea party. The cups of tea went down very well, as well as all the fantastic treats brought in from home. A huge thank you for the time and thought that went into creating our animal based snacks. We had such a lovely day and I think all the animals were ready for a big sleep by the end of school!

In Maths we have been learning the best ways to add and find the total with numbers up to 20. Power Maths has given us lots of opportunities to be independent and share the ways we find our answers. We have been using language like altogether, tens frame and part, part whole model.

In Literacy we read the story the Disgusting Sandwich and talked about what our sandwich would be like, and we used describing words to label our pictures. We then went on to talk about theme day with time connectives which is going to lead into our next study work page.
Our phonics learning has recapped our Phase 5 sounds and our new focus has been to learn the ew sound. We found out that there are lots of alternatives to this sound in Phase 5 like u-e, and ue and sometimes these sounds can be said in different ways.

The afternoons have enabled us to learn more about what makes a good sandwich as we ranked what is important to us when we eat a sandwich. On Wednesday we played Big School Bird Watch games to get to know the names of the birds and then we were great detectives to uncover what was hiding within an owl pellet. We worked alongside Year 3 and the classroom was full of enthusiasm and I could tell that you didn't want the activity to end.

A super week Year 1. I hope you have enjoyed spotting more birds at home this weekend.
