New Year News from Year 1

Welcome back to the new year and our new topic, Zoology.

Happy New Year to all our Year 1 families and adults who work with us in Year 1.

Our 'Big Art' lessons have been fun this week as it has been linked to our work in Literacy and our story the Tiger who came to tea. We began by mixing primary colours and learnt more about how to mix colours using a colour wheel to help us. Once we had experimented with colour, we waited for our paintings to dry, and they then became the back grounds for the next stage of our artwork. We explored how to use oil pastels instead of drawing with a pencil. Can you guess what we have created yet....? When we found out that Henri Rousseau was also the inspiration for our artwork, we saw that one of his most famous paintings was called a tiger in a tropical storm. This gave us the opportunity to draw the most brilliant tigers. Once we had practised on a whiteboard we drew our own and we now have a very own family of tigers to add to our classroom display.

In Literacy we have written eye witness reports to describe what the tiger did in Sophie's house. We then thought about who we would invite to a tea party and then we liked the idea that the tiger's favourite sandwiches were jam sandwiches! We read instructions how to make sandwiches and this will link on to further learning next week.

We have been 'powering our brains' , 'firing our brains,' and 'powering to do our best' in Maths this week. As a class we have been number experts using numbers upto 20. Our particular focus has been linked to looking at the value of 10 in numbers beyond 10. For example, that 15 is one ten and 5 ones.

Art has been a big focus in the afternoons this week. We have completed our big art, researched about Tigers using the search engine Kidrex and we have learnt about the artist Henri Rousseau. Henri Rousseau's life story gave us an example of how important it is not to give up. As a class we looked at a range of his paintings and talked about the things we like. We also found out that he had a fantastic imagination as he has never ever visited a tropical place which are featured in lots of his paintings.

Have a wonderful weekend,

Mrs Pointon
