Happy New Year Y6 - Welcome Back

Home » News » Happy New Year Y6 - Welcome Back

Welcome back. A happy new year to you all. Many thanks for all your Christmas wishes and gifts, they are very much appreciated. I hope you have enjoyed your Christmas break and you are ready for an exciting term of learning.

We began our week by being introduced to our new book Sky Hawk by Gill Lewis. During English we researched key facts on Ospreys and created a planning document that we will now use to write an information leaflet on these amazing birds. Did you know that they live for at least 25 years and have a third eyelid! We will continue with our drafts next week.

In maths we have continued with our fraction's unit by multiplying and dividing fractions. We have used the bar model to prove our answers and found short cuts to calculate too. Mymaths homework reflects this learning. We will now move onto decimals next week.

We have enjoyed reading the first chapter of Warhorse in book club this week. After reading aloud within our groups, we have discussed inference questions and the meaning behind each one. We have also discovered how important Emmeline Pankhurst was to our country, and what the Suffragette movement meant in a different book club activity.

In Spag this week we have revisited using brackets for parenthesis. We have also learnt a new song to help us to use colons and semi colons accurately. Spag homework reflects this learning.

Our BIG ART project, which is linked to our DT unit, has allowed us to use sculpturing skills to begin to create a flock of ospreys which will also form the front covers of our study work books. This project will bring our story to life and result in our very own flock soaring in our classroom. We have also watched an art tutorial on YouTube to help us to learn new feathering skills. We are extremely proud of the results.

Today we thoroughly enjoyed our trip to the New Vic Theatre. This imaginative performance had us all on the edge of our seats. Thank you Mrs Chesters for organising such a treat.

New homework has been set. All children are also aware of a weekend TT Rock Stars Inter-House battle. This began at 3pm today and will end on Monday morning at 9am.

Have a super weekend.

Mrs B.
