Happy New Year and Welcome Back Y5

Home » News » Happy New Year, Welcome Back Y5

Welcome back and a very happy New Year. I hope you have all had a fabulous Christmas. We all settled back into our rhythms and routines beautifully and we began our term in high spirits.

We jumped straight into our new topic on Wednesday by looking at the front cover of our new book, Wolf Brother written by Michelle Paver. This book takes us back into the Stone Age. The story follows the main character; Torak, who is an outcast, all alone wounded, terrified and on the run. His only ally is an orphaned wolf cub. Wolf Brother carries you back thousands of years to a world steeped in natural magic and elemental terror, a world in which trusting a friend means risking your life. There is plenty of page turning drama as every chapter ends with a cliff-hanger, this book definitely had me on the edge of my seat!

After placing this story on our history timeline we begun to look at our Big Art project. We explored different cave art found in the Lascaux and Peche Merle caves in France. Using our sketchbooks we became early artists producing our own cave art sketches. Using these ideas we recreated them onto foam tiles ready for textile printing. Thinking carefully about our choices in colour we went on to produce our prints. We put the finishing touches to our cave art today and they will now be displayed in our classroom.

In Maths we are continuing to focus on fractions. We have worked with improper fractions and mixed numbers this week. In English we are becoming poets. We have focused on different spoken poetry, discussing our likes and dislikes. Today we listened to a poem by WH Auden called Funeral Blues. We are going to use this poem to help us to write our own. As Torak loses his father in our story our poem will reflect his thoughts and feelings.

In RE this term we will look at Hinduism. Today we recorded our previous knowledge of this faith and began to look at our own circle of life.

Just a quick note to remind you that there are four weeks of swimming lessons to take place now the pool has re-opened. They begin on Friday 13th January and will end on Friday 3rd February.

Have a great weekend. Mrs B.
