First Week in Year 4!

Home » News » First Week in Year 4!

What an amazing start to Year 4. It was fantastic to welcome everyone back with a smile on their face, a story to tell and a buzz of excitement for Year 4. As soon as the children stepped into the classroom, they knew what we would be learning this term (I think the envelopes and keys hanging from the ceiling were a bit of a giveaway).

On our first day in Year 4, we spent time getting to know each other and sharing our lovely memories of our six-week holidays. We kicked off the excitement of our new topic by reading the beginning of our book and discussing what we already know but more importantly what the children would like to learn this term. In our English lesson, we then wrote diaries of our favourite day of the summer holidays. I have loved reading these! In the afternoon, we then had our first PE and YoungVoices music lesson.

In Maths this week, we have been learning about place value. In particular, we have used many different ways to represent numbers to a thousand. We used number lines, place value grids, base 10 equipment and partitioning. When have now moved on to Rounding. So far, we have learnt to round to the nearest 10 and 100.

The first week back would not be complete without a LOT of BIG art! This week we have learnt about a technique called pointillism. This was introduced by George Seurat a famous French artist. He used a technique of using lots of tiny dots to create a picture. We used this technique to recreate the Hogwarts house shields and focused on the use of colour mixing. Interesting fact: some of George Seurat's paintings took him 2 years to produce, luckily, ours only took about 2 hours!

It has been a magical week in Year 4 and I am looking forward to the next one! I hope you all have a fantastic weekend!
